Are Your Job Expectations Clear Enough?

0

Did you know unclear job expectations are one of the main reasons for poor performance and turnover of staff?

150 NZ Businesses – 3 Top Recruitment Challenges

Chilli Factor completed a survey with 150 NZ businesses in October 2007. We asked the question: What are your top 3 recruitment challenges? The 3 top problems were Skill Gaps, Attracting staff and Staff Turnover.

Interestingly this was not exclusive to one particular industry or skill level. Why is this interesting? Well, historically there have been skill shortage cycles as a consequence of specific industries’ “champagne and beer markets”. Manufacturing may be experiencing growth but Information Technology might be experiencing a lull. There may be a surplus of available System Engineers but Forklift Drivers may be scarce.

However, generally speaking, the current skill shortages are not affecting one specific industry – it is affecting industries across the board! It is not affecting one level or type of role – but many levels and types of roles! Our snapshot survey results support this. The broad range of companies surveyed stated that they were struggling to find talent for such roles as warehouse pickers, accountants, customers service reps, sales reps, PR reps, systems engineers, managers and more positions. From FMCG to Plastic manufacturing to Hospitality to Information Technology – top performers are challenging to source.

Our survey results are one of the reasons why we set about creating Chilli Factors’ Recruitment Training and Management System. We wanted to help SMEs have a fair chance in attracting, hiring and retaining top performers in an increasingly competitive market.

The Key

One of the keys to counteracting this challenge of sourcing top performers is to hold onto your top performers as long as possible.

It takes some extra thought and energy but this is not a market to be complacent in! Understanding the labour market today and over the next 2 – 5 years is vital. Employers that are strategic now and put a recruitment/workforce plan in place will win over companies that continue to simply react. If you are planning to sustain or grow your business over the next 2 to 5 years (and are reliant on a workforce to help you do so) – you cannot afford to skip ‘Clear Job Expectations’ step in your recruitment process!

The Clear Job Expectation Guide is the smart starting point – an area you can work on right now to help strengthen your position.

It is crucial to the success and longevity of your business that you do everything you can to retain, as long as possible, the talent you work so hard to employ.
